Baltimore, MD -- The cancer-preventing health properties of the antioxidant SGS™ (sulforaphane) found in broccoli have now been introduced in a new consumer product - tea. Six varieties of all-natural gourmet tea bags are being marketed by Brassica Protection Products, which also introduced fresh BroccoSprouts®, the three-day-old broccoli sprouts that have twenty times the concentration of SGS as in adult broccoli, and available in fresh produce sections of supermarkets across the country.

Not all teas are created equal and Brassica® brand Teas, in four green tea and two black tea varieties are the only teas produced with sulforaphane, the long lasting antioxidant. Brassica brand BroccoSprouts and Brassica brand Teas are licensed and patented by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The teas are initially being sold in Denver, Colorado, before being rolled out nationwide.

"We consider SGS as the 'next generation' antioxidant because it is an indirect antioxidant that boosts the body's own natural detoxification systems. As SGS is heat stable and water soluble, consumers can now receive a measured amount of SGS combined with the benefits and great taste of tea," said Brassica president Tony Talalay. "Many direct antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C and E act for only a few hours where they directly attack free radicals, but are quickly eliminated by the body; indirect antioxidants keep on boosting the body's own natural defense systems for several days," according to Jed W. Fahey, Faculty Research Associate and Manager of the Brassica Chemoprotection Laboratory at Johns Hopkins.

Now you can have both direct and indirect antioxidants in one cup of tea!

Brassica chose Colorado as a test market because Coloradans are health-conscious and are avid tea-drinkers.

Each cup of Brassica tea provides 15 milligrams of SGS, the same amount as an average three-ounce serving of adult broccoli. The SGS is naturally extracted with water from broccoli seeds, then added to the teas in a dried powder which does not interfere with the delicious taste of these fine imported teas.

Talalay pointed out that BroccoSprouts contain the most concentrated amount of SGS. The Brassica teas make sulforaphane available in an easy-to-use form combined with the benefits of tea. Significant research studying the health benefits of both green and black teas in preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease is ongoing.

Scientists at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine first discovered the impressive health properties of SGS in broccoli, and Brassica has been producing BroccoSprouts broccoli sprouts to provide a guaranteed level of SGS through a network of certified growers in the US, Japan and New Zealand.

Brassica teas are the newest extension of the brand, and have been under development for two years. The four green teas with SGS include green tea, green tea with lemon, green tea with orange, and a decaffeinated variety. The black teas with SGS include Chinese Sencha black tea and decaffeinated black tea. These teas are made exclusively by the Baltimore Coffee and Tea Company, which supplies gourmet teas to fine stores all over the world including the famous Harrod's department store in London.

Talalay said once market tests are complete in Denver, the brand will be rolled out to supermarkets, health and vitamin, and gourmet stores across the U.S. Orders for the tea can be placed through Baltimore Coffee and Tea (www.baltcoffee.com).

Brassica Teas come 20 tea bags to the package and are available in Colorado Wild Oats, Whole Foods and Vitamin Cottages. Each package sells for $5 to $6.00.
